1798 Barn Preservation (part 1)

We believe that how and what we choose to build and preserve today has a direct, lasting effect on our economy, environment, and generations to come.

We have the privilege of being a part of this awesome 1798 barn. Featuring impressive hand-hewn timbers, a massive summer beams support a queen post truss system, holding purlins that carry the load of the flitched common rafters.

This barn is a great example of traditional craftsmanship and it needs a lot of love. The owner of this beauty has chosen to invest in the history and future of American timber frame barns. It will be a gift for generations to come. We will be working bottom-up from the sill plate to the ridge. Making all the necessary repairs to keep this treasure alive.

In this video, Jeff is resawing some timbers that were milled from Northern White Pine that was harvested from the property. They will be used as straining beams that connect the queen posts, working in tension, helping to resist the thrust of the rafters.
